Joanne Gentry Midyette

Joanne Gentry Midyette - Author

Joanne is a magna cum laude graduate of Limestone College in Gaffney, SC with a BA in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. She received the "General Excellence Award" for Outstanding Senior at her college graduation ceremony in 1977. This award is given annually to one member of the Limestone College graduating class for outstanding academic excellence, extra-curricular involvement, school spirit and community service.

While attending Limestone College, Joanne was editor of her college literary magazine, THE CANDELABRA, for two years and was awarded first place in the literary magazine's competition for poetry.  Joanne has written two children's picture books, ten short stories for children, a middle-grade political satire and a middle-grade novel for "tweens". REETA BOOK READS TO EVERYTHING! is her first published picture book for children.

During her teaching career, Joanne held a valid teaching license for 31 years and taught in public, private and Christian elementary schools and preschools in Oklahoma, Indiana, North Carolina and South Carolina.  Her love for writing was sparked at the age of 9 years old when her fourth-grade teacher challenged her class to write stories with their spelling words each week.  She wrote her first story in September of 1964 and has been writing ever since! Although Joanne enjoys writing for children, she has dabbled in "flash fiction" for women and discovered a venue that has taken her out of her comfort zone!

For 8 years (2007-2015), Joanne and her husband, Bert, traveled throughout western North Carolina and the upstate of South Carolina presenting inspirational assembly programs ( as "Bert and Jo's Preschool Shows") to preschool audiences in day care centers and preschools. For eleven years (1996-2007), the Midyettes traveled throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Georgia and Alabama (as "Midyette Magic"), presenting "character education assembly programs" and "motivational reading programs" for K4-6th Graders in public, parochial and private elementary schools and summer library programs in numerous county and city libraries.  Joanne and Bert enjoy teaching the preschoolers at their local church in Landrum, SC where Joanne serves as the Children's Ministry Curriculum Coordinator. She is presently writing a 52-lesson children's church curriculum entitled "The Christian Warrior Series" that will be available in early 2016.

In her free time, Joanne enjoys white-water kayaking with her husband and his paddling buddies or hiking trails to explore waterfalls in the North Carolina mountains and foothills.  Some of her favorite ways to relax are  writing (of course!) and reading.   Her favorite books are THE BIBLE, historical biographies and political non-fiction.  Joanne enjoys getting together with friends and family over food of any kind (especially desserts!!!).
